Becoming Self-Employed

One reason many people retrain to become electricians is because they want to become self-employed. Most newly qualified adult electrical workers choose to either work for themselves, or on a contract basis. As demand for qualified professionals continues in domestic households, this arrangement can be ideal.

Some people train so they can do electrical work part-time to generate additional income. And some people take electrical courses in order to safely fit a new kitchen at home for example.

Happy clients will sing your praises to all and sundry when you've carried your work out well. Your training will get you up to speed technically, but you'll also need good people skills when dealing with the public.

It's normal for employee electrical workers to put in around a 40 hr week - sometimes with extra overtime. For that, they will typically be paid approximately 26,000pa. Domestic electrical contractors in their own business are wise not to stick too rigidly to a 9-5 routine, as they can bring in a great deal more money if they're flexible. Being self-employed also means there are overheads to consider, so prices have to reflect that.

Choosing The Ideal Training Path For You

The main recognised trade certification bodies in the UK are City & Guilds and EAL. Students training in their teens usually add work experience and NVQs to their C&G exams. But naturally this takes several years. So older career changers tend to go for less lengthy courses that they can fit in around their current work. These courses don't include NVQ assessments, because the trainees are mostly focused on household work.

Career-changers want the best value for their money, and greater flexibility. Overall students are less qualified, but they will have a good grounding in the skills needed for domestic work, and their certifications will be legally acceptable.

So What Would I Learn?

Probably a good place to start would be on a course that prepares you for your EAL level 2 Domestic Electrical Installer. Teaching will comprise of all the wiring fundamentals and safety practices. Your training will enable you to qualify for Part P - now a legal requirement for all domestic electrical workers. The 17th edition IEE wiring regulations is another requirement for electrical workers. Once you've trained sufficiently and become qualified in these areas you can both carry out and self-certify all your domestic work.
